At least 2000 buildings are set to come tumbling down beginning tomorrow as Kenya Power moves in to reclaim power line reserves.

The demolitions dubbed Ondokea Laini will be implemented in several city estates with reports indicating that the owners of the affected buildings have already been notified.

Kenya Power Security Services Manager Geoffrey Kigen confirmed that the operation targeting illegal structures erected on Kenya Power’s main power line will resume next week and no one will be spared.

He confirmed that “It is a multi-agency operation involving over 20 government agencies that have wayleaves which has been ongoing on unsafe buildings in Nairobi”.

Rachel Ruto is no stranger to making bold yet elegant fashion statements, but during the state visit of the Dutch royals on March 18, 2025, it wasn’t just her outfit that stood out—it was her shoes. The Kenyan First Lady stepped out in a pair of brown suede block heels adorned with a gold emblem.

The exercise will be targeting illegal structures in Mihang’o, Mowlem and Dandora power substation.

“We gave them notices in December last year, done sensitisations, marked the buildings on the wayleaves and told the owners to remove them. Apparently some had not done so and those are the ones we are removing. This week we will concentrate on the main KPLC line,” Mr. Kigen stated.

Areas affected

He disclosed that at least 700 structures were brought down last week in some parts of Buruburu Farmers land

Not less than 10,000 ilegal structures have so far been demolished in Imara Daima, Mukuru kwa Njenga, Mukuru kwa Reuben and Sinai village.

The operation has mapped out areas including Umoja Phase 1, Inner Core, Tena, Embakasi Baraka Estate to Tassia Estate, Mathare Valley slums.

Kenya Power guidelines allow structures built 20 metres on either side of a 220kV power line and 15 metres on either side of a 132kV line.
