Deputy President William Ruto has explained that he was forced to cut short his trip to the United Kingdom due to development in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s diary.

The DP had been scheduled to meet Kenyans in the diaspora on Friday evening and deliver a speech at the University of Warwick on Saturday.

The two events were cancelled as President Kenyatta will be leaving for an African Union engagement in Addis Ababa.

“I would have loved to meet Kenyans here but there were some emerging issues as the President will be leaving the country tomorrow for a trip to Addis. The rule is when the President is not around, the DP has to be in the country,” he explained during a public lecture at Chatham House on Friday.

Rachel Ruto is no stranger to making bold yet elegant fashion statements, but during the state visit of the Dutch royals on March 18, 2025, it wasn’t just her outfit that stood out—it was her shoes. The Kenyan First Lady stepped out in a pair of brown suede block heels adorned with a gold emblem.

Raila Odinga

The development came shortly after AU High Representative for Infrastructure Raila Odinga arrived in Addis Ababa for the 37th Session of the NEPAD Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee (HSGOC) meeting that opens tomorrow (Saturday) at the AUC New Convention Centre.

President Kenyatta will join Odinga tomorrow for the AU meeting.

The last-minute cancellation on Ruto’s event had raised speculation on social media as the Kenya High Commission did not give an explanation.
