Exactly a year today, February 6, 2024, Atsu went missing under the rubble in the wake of the destructive earthquake that struck in southern Turkey.

He was subsequently confirmed dead after his lifeless body was pulled out of the rubble. This followed days of intense search by both local and international units in the area.

The ex-Chelsea and Newcastle United winger was later laid to rest on Friday, March 17, 2022, in his hometown in Ada in Ghana’s Greater Accra Region.

Meanwhile, Premier League clubs Chelsea and Newcastle United have paid tribute to the late Ghanaian footballer as the world marks one year of his tragic passing.

The clubs said their thoughts are eternally with Atsu’s family and loved ones, while describing their former player as an incredible person.

Chelsea wrote on X (formerly Twitter):&nbsp;"One year ago today we tragically lost Christian Atsu. Our thoughts will always remain with Christian's family and friends."

Newcastle took to social media to pay tribute to their former employee, who helped them to gain promotion to the Premier League.

“One year ago we sadly lost Christian Atsu in the most tragic of circumstances,”&nbsp;the club wrote on its page, accompanied by a photo of the deceased footballer.

According to the ex-footballer’s elder brother Baffour Gyan, a DNA test was necessary after they found out Gifty had already been married before tying the knot with Asamoah.

“Asamoah Gyan did not just wake up and request for a DNA test on the children. The matter was that his ex-wife was already married to another man before marrying him,” Baffour told Asempa FM.

“So he wanted to confirm if the children were indeed his and the test proved he is their biological father. So the court has directed him to continue looking after the children as their father.”

Gyan and Gifty were once in love and got married 2013 but their relationship became damaged beyond repair, leading to a very bitter separation.

The couple’s marriage made the headlines when Gyan filed for a divorce at the Matrimonial Division of the High Court in Accra in 2018.

The former Black Stars captain was then doubting the legitimacy of his three children and therefore requested for a DNA paternity test to be carried out on each of them to ascertain the truth.

After five years of protracted dispute, the court finally ruled on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, that Gyan is the biological father of all three children of Gifty Gyan.

The court ordered the ex-Sunderland striker to pay his ex-wife a sum of GHc25,000 every month for the welfare and upkeep of their children.

The school fees, medical bills, dental care fees, flight tickets for travel and other costs that may come with raising children, are not included in the above sum.

Gyan’s house in the UK and another four-bedroom apartment in Ghana have also been awarded to his ex-wife by the court as compensation.

A gas station owned by the retired football at Prampram and a BMW car are also among the properties awarded to Gifty as part of the court settlement.

“On the properties, when Asamoah and Gifty were together, he bought her a house at Spintex to stay with the kids. So that house is already in Gifty’s name. It’s hers,” Baffour told Asempa FM.

“Gifty also bought a plot of land in Tema to be used as a gas station, that piece of land was also in her name already. And then the Infiniti car she uses is also hers. So the court is just all the gifts Gyan gave to her remain hers.

“Gifty and lawyers wanted $1 million and other things but the court threw those demands out, because the marriage has been annulled.”

Baffour Gyan, the elder brother of Asamoah Gyan, has revealed that Gifty Gyan wanted $1 million as part of her marriage annulment settlement, but the court did not grant her wish.

The couple have been dating for some time now but managed to keep their relationship private and away from the eyes of the public.

However, in a post on Instagram, Janine shared photos of her baby bump, including one where Partey was in the cut.

The model and influencer captioned the photos “New beginnings”, with her boyfriend commenting beneath “God did.”

Partey is currently injured and hasn’t featured for Arsenal since late August when he suffered a groin injury in training.

This has seen him already miss some crucial matches this season, including the games against Manchester United, PSV and Tottenham.

The Gunners, though, have not missed him much due to the arrival of Declan Rice in the summer, who has been holding down the defensive midfield role.

Theresa Kufuor, the wife of former Ghana President John Agyekum Kufuor, has passed away at the age of 85.

The 37-year-old retired from football some months ago, but is still very much admired by many everywhere he goes.

Aside from his talent, Gyan’s good looks have also endeared him to many, with his fans often drooling over him when he steps out.

Engaging his followers on an Instagram live, the former Black Stars striker said avoiding alcohol is the secret to his good looks.

Gyan officially announced his retirement from football while speaking at the 30th Afreximbank Annual Meeting on June 20, 2023.

The former Sunderland and Stade Rennes forward bowed out of the game as Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals as well as his country’s second most-capped player.

He also stands as Africa’s highest scorer at the FIFA World Cup, having netted six times across three tournaments.

Before his retirement, Gyan hadn’t played for the national team in over four years, with his last appearance coming in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

He was also not included in Ghana’s squad for last year’s World Cup in Qatar, with the Black Stars going on to exit the tournament at the group stages.

At club level, he last featured for Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities two years ago, but hadn’t been active since parting ways with them.

It is unknown what his next steps will be but he’s mostly been involved in football punditry and also holds a UEFA B coaching license, although he is yet to take up any coaching roles.

The football world has been in mourning since Christian Atsu was confirmed dead after being trapped in the rubble following the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey in February.

At 31, the former Ghana international was nearly at the twilight of his career and his demise comes as a painful loss because he had a lot to offer, both on and off the pitch.

Born in Ada Foah in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, Atsu became a shining light to his family and community and made it his duty to impact the lives of others.

One of 10 children born by his parents and the son of a fisherman, Atsu’s career and life were a testament to what one can achieve with the right mix of determination, luck and opportunity.

Not only was he a devoted Christian, but he also made it his mission to care for the less privileged by using his funds to make their lives better.

In a 2019 interview with the Guardian, Atsu said: “My faith is the most important thing in my life. I know I’m one of the lucky people God has blessed.

“I’m very lucky and privileged to be in this position. I had nothing and now I’ve got too much so I have to give something back.”

This overly dutiful thinking – of owing his society and of being lucky to be privileged – guided his every step when he had his breakthrough and he never lost himself to fame and money.

The model footballer

Christian Atsu’s football career started on the dusty pitches in Accra before he was snapped up by the Feyenoord Soccer Academy in Gomoa Fetteh.

He would eventually end up at Cheetah FC, where he was given the platform to develop his game to the next level and, in 2011, he secured his first European trial at FC Porto.

Then just a teenager, Atsu impressed the Portuguese outfit and was handed a permanent contract, although he only trained with Porto’s youth team.

A loan move to Rio Ave would follow, as he sought more game time. In 27 matches for Rio Ave, the winger scored six goals and returned to Porto as a more mature footballer.

Porto boss Andre Villas-Boas integrated him into the first team during the 2012/13 campaign, with Atsu starting nine matches as the club won the league – his first major trophy.

That impressive season with the Portuguese giants earned Atsu a dream move to Chelsea. Unfortunately for him, though, he would spend the next four years with the Blues without making a single first-team appearance.

In that time, he was farmed out on loan to Vitesse, Everton, Bournemouth, Malaga and Newcastle United, before permanently joining the latter in 2017.

Atsu would spend five years at St. James’ Park, helping the Magpies to gain promotion to the Premier League and playing over 50 matches in the white and black jersey.

He parted ways with Newcastle in the summer of 2021 following the expiration of his contract and joined Saudi Arabia side Al Raed on a free transfer that same summer.

After just a year in the Middle East, the Ghanaian winger moved to Turkey to join Hatayspor, where he tragically died in the earthquake just a day after scoring his first goal for the club.

The philanthropist

Atsu’s impact wasn’t just limited to the football pitch. Off it, he also took steps to make life better for the less privileged.

He was always willing to give and he paid the fees of many, including the popular Nigerian comedian Craze Clown.

He was also an ambassador for many children’s charity foundations. In Ghana, he financed the Becky’s Foundation, which caters for orphans.

He had even started building a school for the orphanage, which is made up of nine classrooms, libraries, a pitch and ultramodern libraries, before his death. He was also an ambassador of the charity organisation Arms Around the Child.

Furthermore, he played a huge role in the non-custodial sentencing bill and teamed up with the Crime Check Foundation to pay the fines of petty criminals.

These included persons who were languishing in prison over petty theft, and also helped to reintegrate the freed inmates into society. The winger even went as far as providing money for some of them to start businesses.

In a 2018 interview, Atsu tried to explain the motive behind his philanthropic works: “I lived in an uncompleted building. Every time I go back to Ghana, I see the building I lived in. It’s still uncompleted.

“I say to my friends ‘this was me, this is where I came from’. It’s hard in Africa. You cannot imagine what it is like to see the kids with no money, no house, with nowhere to go.”

“We have to build a better world. As a grown-up guy like me, I can suffer. That’s fine. But not the kids. Not when it’s not their fault.”

Atsu’s achievements

Atsu’s football career lasted over a decade and although he was blighted by injuries at his peak, he still had some achievements to his name.

At Porto, he won the Portuguese league title as well as the Portuguese Super Cup. He was also voted as the club’s young player of the year in 2011.

He also made his mark during his loan spell with Vitesse, where he was voted the club’s player of the year in 2014. With Newcastle United, too, he won the EFL Championship in their promotion season.

For Ghana, Atsu’s best performances came during the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where he helped the Black Stars to finish as runners-up to the Ivory Coast.

Atsu emerged as the player of the tournament, with his long-range strike against Guinea also voted as the goal of the tournament.

Atsu, who was on the books of Turkish side Hatayspor, was trapped under the rubble together with the club’s sporting director Taner Savut.

Both could not be found despite days of searching, with the football world uniting in praying for their safety and hoping for their rescue.

Tributes have poured in from far and near following the confirmation of Atsu’s unfortunate demise.&nbsp;

Ghana international <a href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/sports/football/weve-located-atsus-exact-room-and-shoes-but-player-still-missing-agent/m89vqjj">Christian Atsu</a> has been found dead after being trapped in the rubble for days following the earthquake in Turkey.

The Gunners recorded an important victory over Eric ten Hag’s side on Sunday to re-establish a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

A number of Arsenal fans took to the streets of Jinja in Uganda to celebrate the victory but were stopped by the Police.

At least eight of the fans were also arrested after the Police claimed they didn’t have a permit to hold a procession.

"I don't know what we have done but we were simply celebrating our victory over rivals Manchester United," one of the Arsenal fans, Baker Kasule, told the Daily Monitor.

Meanwhile, lawyer and rights activist Agather Atuhaire believes the action by the Police is a violation of the freedom of the fans.

She described the Police as being “high-handed even after the Constitutional Court nullified all the draconian provisions that gave them unfettered powers to restrict the constitutionally guaranteed freedom of association and assembly.”

The regional police chief James Mubi was, however, of the view that the fans should have informed the Police before flooding the streets to celebrate.

"What would happen if an altercation with rival fans broke out? They did not inform police to provide security for their procession," he told the BBC.&nbsp;

Some Arsenal fans who were celebrating the club’s win against Manchester United have been arrested by the Ugandan Police.

Lawyers for the eight-time Olympic gold medallist said his account had $12.8 million but now reflects a balance of just $12,000.

They are, therefore, demanding that Stocks &amp; Securities Limited return the money to Bolt’s account or face legal action.

“If this is correct, and we are hoping it is not, then a serious act of fraud larceny or a combination of both have been committed against our client,” his lawyers said.

Meanwhile, Stocks &amp; Securities Limited are currently being investigated by Jamaica’s Financial Services Commission.

The investment company is yet to respond to the shocking news of Bolt’s missing money, but said they were taking steps to rectify the situation.

“We understand that clients are anxious to receive more information and assure you that we are closely monitoring the matter throughout all the required steps and will alert our clients of the resolution as soon as that information is available,” said the company.

The Finance Minister of Jamaica, Nigel Clarke, also lamented the situation, saying it was unusual in the country’s financial sector.

“It is tempting to doubt our financial institutions, but I would ask that we don’t paint an entire hard-working industry with the brush of a few very dishonest individuals,” he added.
