Article 132 of the Constitution requires the President to address the opening of each newly elected Parliament.
The joint sitting of the bicameral parliament was attended by Jubilee legislators and those allied to the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta including Kanu, Economic Freedom Party and Maendeleo Chap Chap parties.
The event was given a wide berth by NASA MPs and Senators who snubbed the sitting saying they could not sit and listen to a 'lame-duck' President.
However, one MP went against the wave and attended the joint sitting.
Webuye East MP Alfred Sambu attended the event and was on hand to listen to President Kenyatta give his speech.
Sambu defected to the Amani National Congress (ANC) from the United Democratic Forum (UDF) Party in the run up to the August 8 elections.
He was at one time the Chairman of Kenya Football Federation and AFC Leopards.
Many of the NASA MPs attended a rally organised by their leader Raila Odinga at Kibra which was timed to coincide with the president’s speech in parliament.
However, Kenyatta told off the Opposition leaders daring them to go on with their boycott as it will have no impact.
He said the Jubilee MPs will begin the processes of passing bills noting that they have the majority in numbers, even suggesting that they can easily impeach Raila within two or three months, should he become President.
