Why Betty Kyallo forced herself to get married

Her mum cried bitterly as she exchanged her vows with Dennis Okari.

But in this month’s edition of True Love Magazine, she has opened up like never before.

Speaking on her wedding with Dennis Okari she revealed that she was really reluctant to marry Dennis due to some serious issues they had in their relationship and the fact that he stood her up during their first traditional wedding.

“He did not pick up my call. I tried calling him again after an hour and once again it went unanswered.” She said. Betty then called his family only to find out that they had switched off their phones too “At 3 pm when we tried to call again, all their phones were off. By the time the sun was going down, it was obvious that I had been stood up on my traditional wedding.”

Speaking on why she forced herself to marry Dennis despite the disputes they had, Betty revealed that so much was expected of them as a couple and she had to go through it.

“I felt that this was what everyone was waiting for. We thought that we needed to stay true to the characters we had created. We had to do it for the ‘imaginary’ couples that we were supposed to be inspiring. This is what we said in the magazine and up to now I still don’t know who these couples are. But we were living our lives for them, being the best example to them. It was a lot of pressure, I was young and I thought it was the right thing to do.” She confessed.

And the fact that she decided to go through with the ceremony left her mum crying bitterly for her daughter. “My mom's sisters had to step in and calm her down and reassure her that things would be fine. But I could tell she was bitter and sad.”

Despite their expensive wedding and pricey honeymoon, Betty decided to call her marriage off after realising that their cultures had not meshed and his family was very cold towards her. What made things unbearable was that Dennis joined a religious group and one time when Betty was sick he showed up with a prophetess at the A&E to 'heal' her stomach. And that was when things became too much for the beautiful news anchor.

“I was tired, tired of being the power couple, tired of the religious practices that I couldn’t fathom, and tired of not feeling not protected by him. And when he hinted at divorce I was certain I wanted out, I asked him for a separation.”

And after six months of marriage Betty moved out with their daughter to start a new life.
