Doctors baffled as woman and three children turn blind

She has been unable to see for six months.

Ms. Dorothy Atieno has visited hospitals where doctors have concluded that she has no problems that would require surgery and further recommending to her that she see a specialist.

Ms Atieno, who can’t afford to visit a specialist, has said that she has lost all hope and has resorted to prayers.

She is married to a sugar cane cutter and says that the situation is causing friction within her marriage as her husband feels burdened.

Her first born, Valverine Adhiambo is 16 years old and attending first form at Nyamonye Girls’ in Siaya. She suddenly turned blind on the eve of her closing day.

While talking with The Nation, Ms. Adhiambo explained how she felt as though she had stones in her eyes before she went to sleep and woke up the following morning with all the lights gone.

Ms. Atieno’s remaining two sons, Vincent Okoth who is 9 and Benson Otieno, 3, have gone partially blind.

Ms. Atieno’s world was turned upside down back in May. She was at her shop where she sells groceries and that fateful evening as she was preparing to head home, she felt a sensation in her eyes and then realised that she couldn’t see.

The following day, she went to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Referral Hospital where she was then referred to Sabatia Eye Clinic in Vihiga.

Doctors then told her they couldn’t find anything.

Speaking to the daily she said, “I wondered what it was. I made a second and third trip to the hospital and when I persisted they referred me to Tenwek Hospital for specialised treatment.

Ms Atieno expressed distrust in what they could do for her in Tenwek that they couldn’t manage in Sabatia.
