What every Kenyan needs to know before they move out of their parents’

After a year of pure suffering, I’ve learnt the hard way

After a year of pure suffering, I’ve learnt the hard way. Here are some tips that just might help your life out.

1. Buy! Buy! Buy!

Usijifanye ati utahama na mattress and life will figure itself out. That’s a fat lie. It won’t. The bills will need to be paid and you’ll still need to maintain your social life. Best thing to do is buy all the essentials that are needed pole pole before you make the jump. I normally prefer waiting for Sale offers because everything is cheaper and I’m a bargain hunter. I know the Jumia home makeover sale is on so don’t even think twice. Nunua before warudishe bei  za kisonko.

2. Do not move in with you home girl/ home boy who’s still trying to figure life out.

Honestly, I feel bad for my housemate. I was the home girl who was trying to figure life out. Aki hiyo stress nilimletea! Nafaa kumnunulia nyumba siku moja. I started with a good job. Decided it wasn’t working out so nikaquit (millennial style). 3 months later, I was behind on rent and she was providing for the both of us ni kama mimi ni mtoi wake. Blunder! Lucky for her, I got my life together chap chap and got me a job. Imagine if I was one of those people who just wallow in misery and blame it on the world? Make sure y’all have an account with one month’s rent aside. Akianza story, unalipa one month’s rent na unapea landlord notice. It’s a tough world out here.

3. Stay within your budget

Usitamani maisha London na huna fare ya kwenda tao. Live within your means. If you’re earning 30K and you’re living in a house that’s 15K, that’s suicide. Calculate your rent plus bills (maji, stima, internet etc). Zote collectively zisipite half your salo. You need to be able to save ama invest and let’s not forget pesa ya kujibamba. Life is short. You can’t be living just to pay bills. Jipende kidogo

4. Don’t settle.

One thing I did that I don’t regret was getting a beautiful house. It was within my budget and I was happy being at home. Kuna zile nyumba unaingia na unapata depression pap! It’s not worth it. Imagine having a bad day at work, umesota so huwezi kwenda out alafu unafika home kuona nyumba inakaa kiatu…

5. Always set aside money to spoil yourself

Nilinotice when I first moved out, I was so focused on bills na kujaza nyumba that I forgot I have a life as well. Go watch a movie, dance a little. It’s never that serious. My pal told me that if you buy a Saturn product on Jumia during the Home Makeover, you can get free Avengers tickets. Kuna venye pasi yangu ilispoil and I only have 1200bob to spare. Win win. I don’t know about y’all but I’ll be ironing my outfit for Avengers this Sato ;-)  Sijui nimekuwa mascot wa Jumia sasa.
