Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu was on Thursday released from custody at the Industrial Area Remand Prison.

The governor was allowed to leave after he managed to raise the Sh15 million bail.

Governor Waititu had been sent back to remand holding on Wednesday after he appealed Chief Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi's ruling on bail.

The courts had directed the governor to spend two more nights in custody pending the decision on his appeal.

Waititu claimed he couldn't raise Sh15 million

Governor Waititu, through his lawyer Tom Ojienda, had claimed that the Sh15 million bail was too high for him to raise.

"The bail terms are in excessive, disproportionate, harsh, unjustifiable and should be reviewed downwards.

"The bail and bond terms are excessive issued per incuriam and the terms amount to a constructive denial of bail and bond without compelling reasons," the application stated.

It remains unclear on whether the appeal will be heard again on Friday.
