Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru got engaged to the man of her dreams at a lavish ceremony held at the Lord Erroll htel in Nairobi, bringing an end to speculations on her love life that has remained private despite her high flying career.

The event held on 16 February 2019, two days after Valentine’s Day saw City lawyer Kamotho Waiganjo formalize their relationship and pay dowry in accordance to Kikuyu customs with close friends and relatives witnessing.

Confirming the significant step in their relationship, Waiganjo stated that “It was a beautiful ceremony. The time was right for us to take our relationship to the next level”.

Speaking to The Standard, Waiguru confirmed that the event caught her by surprise.

"I was completely surprised. We had not been talking about formalising our relationship so I did not expect it. We had just come from holidays and were celebrating his birthday as we do with close friends every year."

Fight on the first date

The two lovebirds who have known each other for more than 10 years disclosed that they first met at a ferry in Likoni and shared a meal of bread and soda.

This act of humility, according to Waiganjo melted his heart, making him realize that “she was a basic girl,” despite her career.

Waiganjo then swung into action, pursuing Waiguru with several phone conversation before she eventually agreed to a date.

The two met at a Thai restaurant in Nairobi and had their first fight on the same day with Waiguru on the phone for the better part of the date.

“She was on phone the whole time. I had to ask her why she was not paying attention to our date,” says Kamotho.

“We agreed that when we are together and with family, phones are kept aside unless it is completely necessary. I am not doing badly nowadays,” Waiguru confirmed.
