Revealed: 2 CSs who could be sacked and jailed soon

Two serving Cabinet Secretaries now face prosecution that could see them jailed if found guilty, should the report on the importation of contraband goods by joint Parliamentary committees on Agriculture and Livestock and that of Trade, Industry and Co-operatives, be adopted.

The joint team in a report want CSs Henry Rotich (Treasury) and Adan Mohamed (Industrialization, who was recently moved to East African Community) held liable for their actions that saw the entry into the market of the sugar. The sugar was found to have traces of dangerous substances, including mercury, lead and copper.

“We have agreed to indict the CSs and the parastatal heads as well as recommend that they be investigated further by the responsible government agencies for failing to perform their duties,” a member of the committee said as quoted by the Nation on Monday.

The committee which was earlier divided has also demanded the managers of Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Sony Sugar Company Ltd and sugar directorate at the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) to take individual responsibility for failing to perform their duties. They are being accused of ignoring their duties.

The joint team’s chairman Kanini Kega confirmed that they team has completed the report, which he said has far-reaching implications that are set to shake up the sugar industry. He decried, however, that the accused government agencies have not furnished them with crucial documents.

“The 10 days that the Speaker gave us are now over. We have also concluded our investigations but the challenge we have is that the government agencies have been unable to provide us with their final results on the suitability of the sugar,” Mr Kega said.

Treasury CS Mr Rotich is on the spot over the three suspicious gazette notices he issued in the importation of duty-free sugar last year, while former Industrialization CS Mr Adan Mohamed has been accused of failing to ensure the sugar importation policies are implemented.
