Police in Bungoma are investigating claims made by Ford Kenya Leader Moses Wetangula that he was the target of an assassination attempt during a chaotic burial held in Kiminini on Monday.
Wetangula claimed that the Monday shootings were clearly planned and aimed at eliminating senior leaders of his Fords Kenya party.
“I saw the police who shot the MCA and he was aiming at us. I am perturbed that the bullet was meant for me,” Wetang'ula said.
Kapomboi MCA Ben Wanjala who is being treated at Mt Elgon Hospital in Kitale, supported the claims by the Nasa co-principal.
“The bullet which shot me was meant for Wetang'ula, it missed him by a whisker,” Wanjala said.
The leaders had attended the burial ceremony for Likuyani MP Enoch Kibunguchy’s bodyguard Douglas Wakacha Wabomba.
Bungoma County Criminal Investigation officer John Onyango said that police were investigating the incident and had summoned the local leaders to shed more light on the matter.
Onyango said that Kibunguchy had already been summoned to give more evidence on his remarks during the chaotic burial.
“We have summoned the MP to record a statement on his remarks that there was a plot by his political opponents to have him killed,” Onyango said.
