Government exposes worrying details of drug use in High Schools

The Government on Thursday banned Shisha smoking taking effect immediately.

The drug use and abuse in both secondary schools and colleges has hit a worrying and dangerous level, the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has cautioned in its recent research.

NACADA acting Chief Executive Officer Mr Victor Okioma quipped that Kenya is sitting on a “time bomb” considering "the rate at which girls and boys are surrendering their lives to the fate in drug land".

“We did a research recently on the use of drugs in high schools and colleges of all levels. The results were damning as they showed use of drugs by our children is real,” he said in Kajiado KCB Grounds on Thursday during Kajiado KCB grounds during the commissioning of early childhood development education teachers.

He appealed to the public to help the authority deal with the "threat on the lives of youths".

The official said the agency will sponsor another survey from January 2018 on the impact of drugs in private and public primary schools across the country.

Mr Okioma spoke at Kajiado KCB grounds during the commissioning of early childhood development education teachers.

Governor Joseph Lenku awarded 593 ECDE teachers who were on contracts with permanent and pensionable terms of service.

Lenku noted teaching is a noble profession and that for young children; it is magnanimous as tutors "breathe life" into them.

“While you are trained to maneuver challenges in your line of duty, let it not be lost on you that even if the rewards are not commensurate with your commitment, these children owe their success in academics and beyond to you,” he told the teachers.

The new report comes in the wake of rising concerns about the massive failures of national examinations, especially by the boy child, in the recently released Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in which girls performed exemplary well.
