Panic after official reveals some KCSE papers are still being marked

Matiang'i released the exam on Wednesday but some students are yet to receive their results

Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) Secretary General Akelo Misori stated that Matiang’i had hurriedly released the results even before the process was officially concluded.

The trade unionist accused the Education CS of causing mass failure in this year’s exam with the intention of gaining cheap publicity.

“We cannot hurry to release results without a proper audit and celebrate mass failure of students. The exam results have been released when other papers are still being marked,” Misori complained.

KUPPET’s fears were echoed by KNUT whose Secretary General Wilson Sossion accused the government of failing students with the intention of reducing its burden of paying fees for students who qualify to join public universities.

In the results announced on Wednesday, only 10 percent of the students who sat KCSE this year will qualify to join university.

“There seems to be a deliberate effort to force more students to join tertiary institutions… reduction in the number of students joining universities is an indicator of disaster. Something is wrong, and that is why he (Matiang’i) does not want unions at all,” Sossion complained.
