4 Kenyans killed in flash floods

Two of the deceased attempted crossing a flooded river.

Earlier this week, two people drowned at Ollob village in Kalacha, North Horr Constituency, as a result of raging floods and an additional duo perished in Logologo village following the heavy downpours.

Hundreds of people and property valued at millions, including livestock have been swept in a week-long rain.

Marsabit County Governor Muhammud Ali on Wednesday told the press that among those who drowned on Tuesday were two herders, who attempted to cross a flooded river with their camels.

"They were driving their camels back to the village when they were swept away by floods," said Mr Ali adding that due to the floods in Logologo, two other people were swept.

He added: "neighbouring Kalacha is only accessible by helicopter and most parts of North Horr from Maikona, Kalacha to Illeret are submerged in water. The whole area has now been completely cut from Marsabit town.”

The series of events comes in the wake of massive destruction of Kainuk bridge. The bridge was washed away on Sunday night by heavy rains that have been experienced in the county over the past few days. It was the second time the Kainuk bridge was being washed away in two weeks.

Marsabit County administration and the Kenya Red Cross Society said that already they have distributed food to the affected families and other personal effects in Seku village.

Meanwhile, the Kenya National Highway Authority Assistant Director for Corporate Communication Charles Njogu said Kainuk bridge repair works – which is a key link between Kitale and Turkana County - will be completed by Thursday.
