Surprise as KCPE candidate is strangely placed in school for disabled

Unexplained Selection

Education Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohamed addressing the media

Purity Jericho, who is a former pupil of Kerio Valley Oasis Academy, stated that she was surprised to be selected to join St Lucy’s High School, which is a school for the visually impaired despite not having any disability.

“I did not select the school.

“It was a rude shock for me when I sent short text message (SMS) only to learn I had been selected to join the school.

“I have no disability and I don’t understand why I am being placed in a special school,” remarked Jericho.

The 14-year-old explained that she expected to go to Pangani Girls or Limuru Girls high schools.

Relatives of the KCPE candidate who managed to score 361 marks were also puzzled by the decision made by the Ministry of Education.

Boaz Kilimo, who is Jericho’s uncle and guardian remarked that, “She is from a poor background.

“I have supported her since the start of school and I expected her to be selected to a school she chose,”

Against all Odds

Kerio Valley Oasis Academy was among the school’s in the region that recorded impressive results in the 2018 KCPE examinations despite cases of insecurity being reported in the area.

In similar news, 37 top KCPE candidates from Soin/Sigowet Constituency in Kericho, heaved a sigh of relief after they had missed out on national schools in the ongoing Form One selection.

Fred Osewe who is the County Education boss, pointed out that the omission of the candidates was due to a technical issue.

The form one selection exercise began last week with more than 12,000 students who scored above 400 marks assured of admission into the 103 national schools.

The exercise to place 999,371 Form One students in extra-county, county and sub- county schools is set to end today after it commenced on Wednesday.
