Kalonzo pulls surprise before magistrate

Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka made a surprise appearance before the magistrate hearing the criminal case filed against the Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu.

Although Musyoka is a trained lawyer and an advocate of the High Court, he had not practised law for the past thirty years until Wednesday’s court session.

He is among high-profile team of more than ten lawyers representing Justice Mwilu. Other members of the team include Senior Counsel James Orengo, Dr Joh Khaminwa, among others.

When he rose to address Senior Principal Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi, the NASA principal spoke in specifics and defended his client’s right to dignity.

Musyoka said the charges against the Deputy Justice were politically motivated and meant to evict her from office.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has accused Mwilu of abusing her office and engaging in corrupt practices.

The Wiper Leader graduated from the University of Nairobi School of Law in 1977 where he was in the same class as Chief Justice David Maraga.

Musyoka practice law for a few years before joining politics in 1985 where he has served in various capacities over the past 33 years including as Deputy Speaker, Cabinet Minister, and Vice President.
