I don't believe the contents of the letter from Sonko but the signature is his - Elachi

Elachi has said that the process to vet Miguna could take extremely long.

Elachi who spoke early Thursday during a radio interview further said she has not officially received the letter but has seen it through social media, adding that she will take the right legal process through the county assembly.

“I saw the letter online, I don’t believe the content but I can confirm the signature is that of Governor Sonko. I have not officially received the letter.

“I don’t have to receive it from Cliff Ombeta, who is his lawyer. I only receive it form the office of the governor, and that has not happened,” she said in response to numerous questions.

She revealed that upon receipt of the letter, she will initiate the process to vet the nominee, just after he [Miguna Miguna] clears with the Immigration Department pending issue to do with his passport.

“I will tell Miguna that first of all you are a Canadian, until you clear your issues with the Kenyan government, then is when we can understand we have a Deputy Governor nominee ready for vetting.

“So he must clear with the Immigration, get back his Kenyan passports and from there we can see what follows. I will stick to the law in the vetting process,” she added.

On Wednesday evening, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko nominated controversial lawyer Miguna Miguna for the Nairobi Deputy Governor position.

Sonko forwarded Miguna’s name to Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi for vetting and approval by the House.

“I hereby forward my nominee, Lawyer Miguna Miguna to undergo full vetting process and approval by the County Assembly for the position of Deputy Governor,” reads part of the letter.

It adds: “The nominee meets all the requirements provided for in the Constitution, the Leadership and Integrity Act, the Elections Act and County Government Act.”

The Nairobi Deputy Governor’s seat fell vacant following the resignation of Polycarp Igathe in January 2018.

Igathe, who is set to join Equity Bank as the Chief Commercial Officer, cited failure to earn Governor Sonko’s trust as his reason for resignation.
