Outrageous Bus Fares Kenyans are Paying Today

The country turned into a walking nation on Monday as matatu operators charged outrageous prices.

Kenyans across the country had to pay outrageous bus fares as they grappled with the transport crisis that hit the country on Monday.

Public service vehicle owners made good on their threat to keep off the roads to protest the government's enforcement of the 'Michuki rules.'

Passengers using Jogoo-Outer Ring Road stated that they had to pay as much as Ksh200 to the CBD from Pipeline.

High fares charged

At Donholm bus stage commuters had to part with Ksh100 as their fare while those who couldn't afford the outrageous fares chose to walk.

It emerged that fares from Pangani to town, a distance of about five kilometres, had shot up from Ksh20 to Ksh80.

In Githurai 45, commuters were charged Ksh250 to the CBD and Ksh200 from Roysambu. It was the same situation on Ngong Road, Uthiru.

Passengers who tried to access Rongai from Railways bus terminus had to pay up to Ksh300.

The crackdown on Matatus saw Buru Buru commuters stranded s there were hardly any matatus at the stage from 5:30am.

Relief from government

From Kangemi to CBD commuters paid Ksh100 while those from Kahawa Sukari to CBD paid Ksh150. It cost commuters from Githurai Ksh200 to CBD.

Kahawa Wendani to CBD cost Ksh250 while commuting from Uthiru to Westlands one had to part with Ksh150. Matatus charged Ksh350 from Donholm to Mlolongo.

In a bid to rescue commuters from being stranded Transport CS James Macharia directed the Kenya Railways to reduce train fares by 10% to accommodate more passengers as the government enforces the Michuki rules.
