Raila issues statement on quitting local politics to focus on AU job
Raila responds to critics calling for his retirement after landing AU job
Odinga assured his supporters that his decision to take up the role of AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa would not alienate him from local politics.
I am going nowhere," Odinga told his supporters at a funeral in Yimbo, Siaya County,
"My new appointment as AU envoy comes with an office in Nairobi. I will just be travelling to Ethiopia, South Africa and other African nations on assignment and returning to the office in Nairobi, where I will be based." He clarified.
His comments added weight to those of his elder brother Oburu Odinga who dismissed those calling for Raila’s retirement as day dreamers.
"He is a politician by blood. Those thinking he will retire soon are daydreaming," Oburu said.
A section of politicians allied to DP Ruto have been calling for Odinga’s retirement from local politics and concentrate on his continental engagements.
According to the AU chair, Odinga’s new role at the AU will entail supporting and strengthening the efforts of the Commission’s relevant departments.
“The decision is part of the African Union’s drive to expedite the integration of the continent through infrastructure, in order to promote economic growth and sustainable development". Read the statement announcing Odinga’s appointment that coincided with Mashujaa day.
