Uhuru's team makes controversial decision on Ruto's presidency bid in 2022

DP Ruto is jostling up as a successor to incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The Star in an exclusive coverage claimed that a Nyeri County lawmaker proposed a raft of changes in picking of running mate for DP Ruto, and keep at bay the direct involvement of President Uhuru Kenyatta in the matter.

The lawmaker is said to have proposed that the politician to deputise the presidency bid for DP Ruto would be subjected to a mini election – preferably a party primary – ahead of the general election.

Pending the Supreme Court final judgement on the riveting petition challenging the reelection of President Uhuru Kenyatta in the historically divisive October 26 repeat polls, Mt Kenya politicians are said to be planning a major meeting in mid-December to come up with a plan on succession, which may not be changed.

The vote rich Mt Kenya bloc, however, seems split into several outfits with one team which includes lawmakers from Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Kirinyaga opposing another from Kiambu and Murang’a. Nyeri, Nyandarua, Laikipia and Nakuru is said to have formed yet another third bloc.

The first group believes Meru Senator Kithure Kindiki or Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru should be Ruto’s deputy in the seemingly would-be tight race for presidency in 2022, the local daily quipped.

The new revelations come after a long silence following the remarks by former Kiambu Governor Mr William Kabogo that the support for “Mr Ruto’s presidency in 2022 is not guaranteed from Mt Kenya region.” The utterances, analysts argued, might have been the cause of the political fall of Mr Kabogo, which started during the Jubilee party primaries in May this year, an exercise DP Ruto exclusively supervised.

“I’m not being fought because of you (Kiambu people), but by those who want seats in 2022, but I will face them head-on and I’m not keeping quiet this time round. I’ve made a similar stand before when I said we will not give this person (Ruto) the seat just like that and I’m saying it again. We will not support him unless we see development,” Mr Kabogo said while addressing a gathering in Kiambu.

Kiambu’s incumbent Governor Mr Ferdinand Waititu truced Mr Kabogo in the Jubilee party primaries and later emerged the winner with over 70 per cent of the votes cast in August 8 polls. Mr Kabogo blamed DP Ruto for his fallout with Jubilee.
