I regret campaigning for NASA – ODM MP declares

Cracks have appeared in NASA ever since the submission of the House leadership list.

The disquiet and disunity in the NASA played out over the weekend yet again after Msambweni MP Suleiman Dori of ODM publicly declared he regretted campaigning for the coalition in the last elections.

Dori complained that leaders and residents of the Coast region had been given a raw deal in NASA and have not been treated well despite them voting overwhelmingly for Raila Odinga in previous elections.

“I ask you for forgiveness on behalf of Coast MPs. In the last campaigns we led you to NASA. We voted in 27 MPs thus being the majority followed by Nyanza but surprisingly few weeks ago we were shortchanged,” Dori lamented.

Dori who is also the Coast Parliamentary Group Chairman cited the lack of representation by the Coast NASA MPs in the House committee.

Speaking at his Gasi home, the Msambweni legislator said the NASA Coast MPs had been taken for granted.

He also revealed that the Coast MPs this week will unanimously unite regardless of party affiliations to vote for Lunga Lunga MP Khatib Mwashetani as the Deputy Chair of the Environment and Natural Resources departmental committee in parliament.

The recent appointments by NASA to the House Committees caused resentment by Coast leaders who felt sidelined in the new line-up as they termed the Minority Whip position which was given to Suna East MP Junet Mohamed as rightfully theirs.

The powerful position had previously been held by former Kilifi North MP Gideon Mung’aro and Wundanyi MP Ludidi Mwadeghu both from the Coast.

The submission of the list of names to the National Assembly and Senate prompted a walkout by Coast MPs saying that they had been shortchanged.

“I oppose the list from the start because it has no gender balance. The list was formulated without any consultation among the affiliate parties. There was no parliamentary group meeting to endorse the same,” protested Dori.
