Thousands worth of furniture damaged

Teargas, chaos at City Hall as goons attack Beatrice Elachi in Nairobi county assembly speaker's office

Chaos rocked City Hall on Wednesday as goons stormed the office of the Speaker of the county assembly and destroyed furniture worth hundreds of thousands.

The goons stormed the office just moments after Speaker Beatrice Elachi announced her return to the assembly.

The attackers who are believed to have been led by Majority Leader Abdi Guyo took apart the desk at the office and broke various other pieces of furniture.

In a press statement before the chaos, Ms Elachi had declared that her return would mean tough regulations to whip the assembly back in line.

"Members of the county assembly of Nairobi will not be allowed to travel without the signature of the speaker and each member must seat in three committees as per the law and one sessional committee," she declared.

She was flanked by Homa Bay Woman Rep Gladys Wanga and a number of ODM MCAs during her press conference.

Following the chaos, Speaker Elachi pointed a finger at Jubilee party Secretary General Raphael Tuju for turning a deaf ear to her pleas for support.

"I had talked to Tuju and I had told him that the Majority Leader is planning to come and break everything, he (Tuju) told me he is consulting. Surely, before he finishes his consultation everything will be gone and people will die!" Elachi complained.

The embattled speaker vowed to attend afternoon assembly sessions on the same day despite having been threatened that the same violence against her would be repeated.
