Alleged assault of cops: 3 men get N300,000 bail

Three men have been granted bail in the sum of N300, 000 for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

A Magistrates’ Court which gave the ruling, also granted the accused a surety each in like sum and that the sureties must provide evidence of tax payment to the Ondo State Government.

The accused —  Taiwo Olawole, 40, a tailor; Tunde Okunuga, 38, a bricklayer; and Seyi Okunuga, 23, a trader — were given a N100,000 bail each.

The prosecution alleged that the accused assaulted the duo of  Cpl. Segun Orimisan and Cpl. Samson Oladunwoye while trying to arrest a suspect.

The men, whose addresses were not provided, are standing trial on four-count charge of felony, assault, obstruction of lawful duty and conducting themselves in a disorderly manner.

The trio pleaded not guilty .

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Zedekiah Orogbemi told the court that the accused had on Feb. 29 at about 6.30 p.m. at Eni Street, Okitipupa, beaten up the two policemen while performing their lawful duties.

According to Orogbemi, the policemen had gone to the arrest a man, Seyi Okunuga, for an undisclosed offence.

The prosecutor said the accused also conducted themselves in a disorderly manner at the Okitipupa Police Station.

The offences violated Sections 516, 197, 358 and 249 (a) (1), of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ondo State 2006, he said.

The Magistrate, Mr Banji Ayeomoni, adjourned the case to March 20 for further hearing.
