Woman docked for alleged joint act, cheating

A 4-year-old woman is standing trial a three-count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust and cheating.

The police on Thursday arraigned a 44-year-old woman,

The woman, who resides at 69 Road, Gwarinpa, Abuja, is standing trial on a three-count charge.

However, she denied committing the offence and the judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, granted her bail in the sum of N200,000 and one surety in like sum.

Sadiq said the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and and adjourned the case till May 3 for further hearing.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Zannah Dalhatu, told the court that the matter was reported by Hajiya Nailatu Hassan of Lokogoma, Abuja, at Gwarinpa Police Station on March 24, 2015.

Dalhatu said that the complainant said that on March 15, 2015, Mohammed and two others now at large, formed common intention and collected N7.6 million to secure two trucks of rice for her.

The prosecutor added that after collecting the money, the defendants diverted the money to their personal use.

Dalhatu said Mohammed had confessed during investigation that part of the money was given to her and she wrote an undertaken to pay the money to the complainant.

He explained that the defendant had paid N5. 9 million and was yet to pay N1. 7 million balance, an offence which contravened sections 79, 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge against her and her counsel, Cynthia Nnamdi, applied for her bail and assured the court that she would not jump the bail.
