Freezing may not be the best way to keep food fresh.

When the ice penetrates the meal, it can become watery when it's finally thawed.

While freezing may b the best way to keep food fresh for the longest time, there may be better ways to store food.

Here are 4 ways to keep food fresh without refrigiration.

1. Canning

This involves cooking food partially to kill bacteria then sealing it in specialised sterile jars. Additives like brine or sugar syrup can be used.

2. Drying

All the moisture from the food is removed using either a low temperature oven or a food dehydrator. Some dried foods can be eaten as is or are rehydrated when they need to be consumed.

3. Fermenting

Similar to canning, the fermenting method has food stored n jars but it allows for good bacteria to enter the food. Acidic brine is added to allow for controlled fermentation.

4. Curing
