According to reports, the building started developing cracks earlier in the day raising an alarm among the occupants.

The landlord then called in contractors to make repairs but the crack grew bigger and bigger.

When it proved difficult to repair, the occupants called the police who tried to force them out.

However, some of the tenants were adamant to evacuate and a few hours later the flat caved in burying some.

One of the tenants identified as Ms Dorothy Aoko told a local paper that her 5-year-old and 22-year-old nephew were missing after they delayed to leave the house, insisting that they had to finish eating supper.

“At the scene, I saw my four other children who told me that the two were eating in the house. Police declined to let me go for them,” Ms Aoko said.

Confirming the reports Pius Masai -the Deputy Director and Communication Officer National Disaster Management Unit- mentioned that although some tenants refused to evacuate there were others who did so promptly.

"Most families cooperated and (were) evacuated safely. However, it is believed that some people may have been trapped. Rescue efforts are ongoing,"

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed that two people had so far died following the collapse.

Speaking on the tragedy Nairobi Lands executive Christopher Khaemba acknowledge that the building did not meet the set standards.

"Kware area was unplanned. No developments are allowed there. But you find that most of these developers were brought by politicians,” Mr Khaemba stated.

Rescue operations are still ongoing.
