The junior middleweight was rendered unconscious immediately (although his eyes remained open), and he was down for several minutes following the blow from Conwell. He received medical attention in the ring, and was then given a neck brace and an oxygen mask and carried out of the arena on a stretcher. Paramedics rushed him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, during which time he remained unconscious and reportedly suffered a seizure.
ESPN reports that Day, 27, underwent emergency brain surgery and was put on a breathing tube and placed in the intensive care unit. The New York Daily News appears to have confirmed that the coma is medically induced (a treatment which is often used to allow time for swelling on the brain to go down).

Conwell, meanwhile, has tweeted that he is "praying" for Day to recover, and encouraged his followers to do the same. "I give my blessings and concerns to him and his team," the 21-year-old fighter told IFL TV after the match. "I hope he is OK. I know he is a great person."
Day was named the Daily News' Golden Gloves Champion in 2012, as well as the USA Boxing welterweight champion and US Olympic alternate. He is also the recipient of the Sugar Ray Robinson Outstanding Athlete Award.
