Last night's episode of Fox's 9-1-1 series took an emotional turn when it was revealed that a gun found in the process of investigating a cold case murder was actually the gun that was used to murder Athena's former fianc Emmett, who was a police officer. The show then turned back the clock with a series of flashbacks that showed how Athena came to join the LAPD and her fairytale romance with Emmett.
Back in present day, Athena is able to help track down Emmett's killer, and she gets some closure from the murder that's haunted her for 30 years. Fans were moved by the powerful scenes from the episode, and many viewers shared their thoughts online.

Angela Bassett,
who plays Athena
, also reacted to the episode in her own way. The veteran actress told
Entertainment Weekly
that she was happy that her character got the opportunity to have a flashback episode.
"It was exciting! I was thrilled that I got to do it. I was looking forward to it because weve done it for just about all the other characters, so I was wondering when it would be Athenas turn. It was informative and really interesting to find out she had a fianc 30 years ago that was taken too soon out of her life and the effect that had on her life, his moms life, and his familys lives," Bassett explained.
Bassett also feels like the storyline allowed viewers to get an inside look at her character, and it also may explain some of Athena's life choices later on.
"Maybe Emmett's death also affected [Athena] when it came time for her to pick a new mate and her love choices thereafter. Michael [Athena's first husband] accused her of knowing somewhere deep inside that she picked him for a reason," Bassett told Entertainment Weekly . "They never could connect emotionally 100 percent. Maybe Michael was a safe choice for her?"
