Lord Varys dies in Game of Thrones season 8, episode 5. Daenerys orders his death after she learned from Tyrion that he betrayed her. Dany commands her dragon, Drogon, to breathe fire onto Varys.
Game of Thrones has no problem sending its major characters to the chopping block, and this week, it was the end of the road for Varys.
Lord Varys, aka the Master of Whispers, died on the fifth episode of Game of Thrones' eighth and final season after Daenerys learned he spread the word about Jon Snow's true lineage - the one logistical hiccup in her bid for the Iron Throne.
How did Varys die?
After Dany learned of Varys' betrayal from Tyrion, Grey Worm came to collect Varys from his chambers. (Varys must have known what was coming, because he takes off his rings and leaves them in a bowl on his desk.) Sure enough, Grey Worm collects the eunuch from his chambers and brings him down to the edge of the water, where an angry Day is waiting for him. Her last remaining dragon, Drogon, appears behind her from the darkness.
Then Dany says " dracarys ."
You know what that means: Peace out, Varys.
Varys, played by Conleth Hill, had been a Game of Thrones mainstay from season 1, collecting and disseminating information through his network of so-called "spiders." Though he was an advisor to Dany by the end of the series, Varys was never particularly allegiant to one house over another. As he tells Jon Snow before his death in episode five, his chief goal was to have the most effective ruler on the Iron Throne.
