That sensation might turn out to be more and more of a common phenomenon, as musicians who open themselves up to extremely loud and potentially damaging circumstances on a nightly basis deal with potential long-term consequences. The latest to find himself in this unfortunate situation is Mark McGrath, the singer best known for fronting the memorable 90s outfit Sugar Ray. In a recent post-show interview with the Daily Mail TV ( via the Detroit Free Press ) McGrath said that his hearing has in fact been failing him.
"Im deaf now. I cannot hear any more, he said, after apparently being unable to hear a question asked of him. Its years and years of being on the road and being two feet in front of cymbals and drums, so high frequencies... I can't hear anymore. Ill be listening to people, and they'll tell me their names, and I can't hear anymore. It's scary because my job is hearing."
It's sad to read about McGrath's recent struggle. While it's impossible to put yourself into the headspace of someone who's been a performing musician for more than three decades, it's confusing to hear McGrath's acknowledgement that while there have been technological advances to help protect the ears of younger and older musicians alike, he refuses to make use of them in order to protect what's left of his hearing. The singer doesn't see it as an option for the way he operates.
Fortunately for the new generation, they have in-ears. I'm dumb enough not to use them though," he continued. "I still need the (sounds) and smells of a concert, and that includes the auditory part, but unfortunately, mine's going."
In further discussion on Daily Mail's show, however, it was said that the frontman has been working with his doctors to ensure that he keep the remaining hearing that he has left.
