Normally, dermatologist Sandra Lee, MD, a.k.a. Dr. Pimple Popper 's fans can take anything. They are a super tough bunch. (Way to be #WHStrong, Popaholics!)
Her latest Instagram video proves there is a limit, and it's xanthelasma. She captions this rare procedure: "Starting the week off with something different! Heres a xanthelasma removal!"
For this unique surgical procedure, Dr. Pimple Popper uses multiple tools. She starts with a scalpel and slices right on her patient's eyelid around the growth. Yes, that close to the eye. Tbh I can barely watch. It only takes a few more snips, and the xanthelasma are long gone.
What is xanthelasma anyway? They are "soft, cholesterol-filled plaques that develop under the skin, usually on or around the eyelids and most often near the nose," according to Harvard Health Publishing . "They can be a sign of hyperlipidemia high levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, or other lipids (fats) in the blood." Xanthelasma are more common in middle-aged and older adults, especially women. The good news: xanthelasma are always benign, don't spread, and rarely impair vision.
Dr. Pimple Popper 's Popaholics had a lot of thoughts about this procedure. One wrote: "how she doin all this talkin and not gouging out his eye ball " Another fan shared: "I can usually watch all this stuff with out it bothering me. This one I had to watch through my fingers!!" The combination of the xanthelasma and the scalpel close to the eyes was just too much to handle for some: "Ohhh man cant handle this " and "Oh that's terrifying" and "Anxiety check."
Phew! I think I need some good ol' fashioned blackhead pops to recover from that surgery.
