In an emotional reunion on January 4, four young men—Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, and Ronny Kiplagat—were joyfully embraced by their families after weeks of uncertainty.

The young men, who were believed to have been abducted in December 2024, returned home alive, much to the relief of their loved ones and the nation.

The disappearance of these men had sparked a nationwide conversation, with many Kenyans speculating that the ongoing abductions are linked to individuals within the security agencies.

While their return was a moment of relief, the circumstances surrounding their disappearance and subsequent release have left many questions unanswered.

Politicians from various parties have voiced their opinions, calling for swift investigations into the incidents of abductions that continue to plague the country.

Karen Nyamu - Police should arrest the released men

However, not all reactions have been well-received. On the same day as the reunion, nominated Senator Karen Nyamu found herself at the centre of controversy after making remarks about the abductions.

In an Instagram story, Nyamu suggested that the police should arrest those who had been released in order to kick-start an investigation. Her comments, however, quickly ignited a firestorm of criticism.

In fact police should arrest those released immediately to assist in investigations. I've seen the argument that if the government isn't abducting and killing then why isn't it arresting those doing it? Our criminal justice system requires Actus reus (the criminal act) and mens rea (the criminal intention/ mind) proven beyond reasonable doubt in a prosecution. Obviously they're carrying out this operation through 3rd parties so you will never catch them. Arresting those released is a good place to start.

Nyamu urged Kenyans to look beyond the surface of the issue and stop blaming the government for the abductions.

It's good over evil, life over death. Abductions are the biggest story in Kenya today. You would expect that after the release of the men, their personal accounts would be trending by now. Media know that would be the biggest news. But where are those accounts?

The leader stated that some individuals were attempting to provoke anger among the public in a way similar to the uproar over the Finance Bill 2024.

They're looking for something that will anger Kenyans as much as the finance bill 2024 did. But killing our children to frame the government?? Everyone is criticizing the government! How many can it kill! Then 80% of KOX wd be missing by now. Wacheni ushoga. Opposition bure kabisa!!

Kenyans question Nyamu's comments on abductions

Nyamu’s post went viral, with many Kenyans questioning her sincerity and expressing frustration over her stance.

Several people pointed out that she had remained silent during the period when the men were missing, and questioned whether she truly understood the pain the families had endured.

The senator’s comments were met with scorn, with many critics accusing her of downplaying the significance of the abductions, especially with two more people still missing.

As investigations continue into the disappearances, the nation remains divided, with many hoping for justice and clarity regarding the true circumstances behind these troubling events.
