Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's administration on Thursday shut down businesses in two buildings along Moi Avenue over unpaid rent arrears.

City Hall shut down the two buildings - Princely House and another owned by P&L Investment - forcing tenants to close their businesses for the day.

"All tenants are now directed to pay rent directly to Nairobi City County until all outstanding land rate arrears of…are fully recovered and land rates clearance certificate issued by County Treasury," one of the notice boards read in part.

County director of revenue Agnes Kisaka conveyed that Princely House and another owned by P&L Investment owe the county government Sh774,619 and Sh739,251 respectively.

Ms Kisaka went on to reveal that the county government is claiming over Sh30 billion in arrears from other Nairobi tenants.

She added that the exercise would continue throughout the city to pressure the owners into paying up.
