Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i wants all academic institutions including universities to be closed for two weeks from August 4 due the elections.

Matiang’i has proposed that all the learning institutions should take a two-week break to leave room for elections to be conducted.

Majority of the polling centres across the country are in education institutions hence the fear that this will disrupt learning in Kenya.

The recently concluded party primaries were held when schools were closed for the holidays.

Previous general elections before the enactment of the constitution were held in December when schools were closed.

Matiang’i insisted that the date is preliminary and will be subject to changes.

He indicated that communication will be issued in case of any changes.

Matiangi also asked school heads to take an inventory of the properties that will be handed over to IEBC for conducting elections and ensure that IEBC officials hand them back in their good state once elections are over.

IEBC will be forced to compensate for any school property destroyed during the election period.
