Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has sparked excitement with his first engagement with the public in Eastern region after declaring interest in contesting for the presidency in 2027 elections.

The former CS was received by jubilant crowds when he toured Kitui with several stopovers during which he interacted with the public.

Matiang’i who was on his way from Katulani village where he went to condole with the family of his bodyguard Christopher Wambua made several stopovers at various markets in the region.

Wambua who passed on in September served as the former CS’s bodyguard for ten years.

The former CS was interacted with traders and locals along the Kitui-Machakos road with crowds pictured at every stop he made.

Photos of his visit show a jovial Matiang’i buying local commodities and interacting with the vendors, with a sizeable crowd surrounding him at every stop.

Matiang'i hires Canadian lobby firm

The former CS made a decisive move on July 29, 2024 when he enlisted the services of reputable Canadian lobbying firm Dickens & Madison to support his bid.

Under the agreement, the Montreal-based firm will provide media and public relations services on behalf of the foreign principal's (Matiang'i) goals and activities.

It will also assist Matiang'i in preparing and disseminating necessary informational materials.

Ruto's preparations for 2027

While President Ruto is yet to declare interest in seeking a second term, insisting that it is time to deliver on his pledges and would make declare his stand at the right time, analyst opine that he is keen on a second term and is making strategic moves in readiness for the same.

Following a fallout that culminated in the impeachment of his former deputy Rigathi Gachagua, the President has made several appointments in what critics and analysts opine is aimed at appeasing a restless Mount Kenya voteblock.

Others seeking to succeed President Ruto at the end of his first term include Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah who unveiled a committee to explore the viability of his candidature, among other things.

Another political formation is also taking shape bringing together former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka who are keen on denying President Ruto a second term.
