Police are investigating an incident in which employees at Metro Plastics Kenya Ltd were allegedly locked up overnight at the factory premises on 14 March 2020 when a fierce fire broke out at the plastics manufacturing factory.
The fire is reported to have started on Saturday morning, with fire fighters who responded swiftly to save life and property having a difficult time putting it off as chemicals in the factory kept re-igniting it.
Addressing the press after the incident, Makadara Deputy County Commissioner Fred Ndunga ordered that the employer who is suspected of having locked in the workers be arrested and charged.
"The firefighters arrived quickly but the problem is that with chemical exposure, the fire reappears after extinguishing," he said.
Reports indicate that some employees of the factory that is located along Nadume Close off Lunga Lunga Road.had to jump over walls to escape from the fierce fire and sustained injuries in the process.
Mr Ndunga added that investigators are reviewing CCTV footage to establish what happened on the fateful day when the employer is said to have locked up the employees at the facility.
Firefighters from the Kenya Pipeline Company that is located at Industrial area teamed up with those from the Nairobi County government to put out the fire.
Property of unknown value went up in smoke during Saturday morning incident that saw some residents of the neighbouring Mukuru-Lunga Lunga informal settlements flee as they had difficulties breathing due to heavy smoke.
