Police gunned down three men suspected to have stolen a vehicle in Kasarani.

The three suspects are said to have opened fire to police who were chasing them which resulted in a gunfire exchange.

According to officers, the three had stolen a Toyota Fielder of registration plate number KBX 441N at Dandora area when police flagged them they refused to stop.

Officers said the suspects had used a black sellotape and modified the number 1 on the registration plate to a 4, the plate number after the makeshift modification read KBX 444N.

When police flagged the vehicle one of the suspects is said to have pulled out a gun and fired at a police officer shooting him in the knee.

Police shot the three suspects and recovered an AK47 rifle and several rounds of ammunition from them.

Nairobi Regional police commander Philip Ndolo who confirmed the incident adding that the bodies were moved to City mortuary while the vehicle towed to Kasarani police station.

Statistics indicated that the crime rates in Kenya have increased in 2019 compared to 2018 with the number of persons reported to the police to have committed crimes increased by 5.1 per cent to 75,037 in 2018.

The number of murder cases crossed the 1,000 mark last year as crime statistics painted a grim picture for the country.
