Nairobi City County issued a statement on Wednesday condemning the assault of Citizen TV reporter Kimani Mbugua.

In a statement sent to newsrooms by Governor Mike Sonko's Director of Press, Elkana Jacob, the County stated that it would probe the assault and those found culpable held to account.

Additionally, the county government cautioned city askaris from asking or taking bribes and warned those found engaging in the vice would face the law.

"The Nairobi City County Government has noted with concern the story about an incident of assault against a Citizen TV journalist who was filming county askaris demanding bribes," the statement read in part.

"The county government has zero tolerance for corruption and the matter will be subjected through investigation," the statement further added.

Notably, the county cautioned that there were individuals who pose as county askaris that have infiltrated the unit and stated they were dealing with the issue.

On Tuesday Citizen TV reporter Kimani Mbugua sustained head and neck injuries after he was assaulted by men who claimed to be city askaris.

According to the journalist, the officers accosted him while he was recording an incident where the officers were demanding a bribe from a boda boda operator who had flouted the motorbikes ban in Nairobi’s CBD.

The journalist, however, noted that those who arrested him had no uniform but provided identification showing they were Nairobi County government officials but he could verify if the IDs provided were authentic.
