M-Pesa services unavailable after system upgrade

M-Pesa services were down for more than 10 hours over the weekend.

Telecommunications firm Safaricom has announced that their Lipa na M-Pesa and M-Shwari services are currently unavailable.

This comes after a 15 hour disruption for M-Pesa users from 10 pm on Saturday September 9 to 1pm on Sunday September 10 due to to a system upgrade.

Safaricom has been undergoing occasional system upgrades since June 30, a move that is geared towards adding new features and automating some functions to reduce the need for customers to make requests at its call centers.

"This upgrade paves the way for the next phase of M-Pesa and will enable the service delivers, even more, value for our customers and partners," Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore had earlier stated.

It is unclear how long the services will be unavailable.
