Last year, MTV European Music Awards had a ‘Steve Harvey’ moment after they wrongly announced that Wizkid was “Best Africa Act” only to take it away and given to Ali Kiba.

Ali Kiba

According to the voting system, Kiba was the rightful owner of the award given to Nigeria’s Starboy and after major outcry from East Africans; Wizkid was stripped off the title and it was given to Ali Kiba.

This was after MTV made this announcement clearing up the error:

"MTV congratulates Alikiba, who has won Best African Act at the 2016 MTV EMAs.The news was revealed 10 November, after the incorrect results for Best African Act were posted late Sunday night (6 November) due to an error.Six Worldwide Act winners, including Wizkid, were selected by an international committee of MTV music executives to recognize current artists who are rising to have a wider geographic appeal beyond their local regions.

The winners were chosen based off a range of criteria including international MTV video play, radio airplay, streams, and sales across multiple territories and regions."

Through their spokesperson, MTV then went ahead to praise the two artistes before apologising for the horrible error:“Both Wizkid and Alikiba are great artists and deserving winners at the MTV EMAs and we congratulate them wholeheartedly on their achievements. We apologise for any confusion but we are pleased to recognise the achievements of both these artists on this global platform."

Following this embarrassing scenario, Wizkid pulled down all posts associating him with the MTV debacle and Ali Kiba thanked his fans for making his MTV EMA dream come true.

"Thanks to MTV for this huge honour - it's very exciting to be recognized at the MTV EMAs and I am delighted to bring home the award to my fans in Tanzania and East Africa. Thank you to my family and management." Ali Kiba commented through a post on the MTV website.

About 3 months after the confusion, Ali Kiba has finally brought the trophy back home making it the 3 EMA award that has gone to East Africans. Diamond Platnumz bagged it in 2015 and Sauti Sol in 2014.

As Alikiba made his way to his hometown he was accompanied by his brother Abdul Kiba and a cheering crowd, but the best moment of all was when Kiba handed the trophy to his mum.

That look of a proud mum is what everyone dreams of...its everything and makes all the efforts one has made worth it.
