Johnnie Walker unveils top 20 teams for the Kenya racing festival

On Thursday, all roads led to K1Klub House for the official unveiling of the 20 teams participating in this year’s Kenya Racing Festival.

The gathering was put together by Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) under its Johnnie Walker brand in a mission that will see loyal whisky consumers rewarded with an all-expenses paid trip to Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2019.

The 20 teams were selected from a pool of 80 that participated in a competition meant to identify who could clock the fastest lap and fastest simulator driver.

The special event was presided over by Diageo Head of Spirits, Grace Nshemeire-Gwaku and  EABL sales Director Andrew Kilonzo, with Radio guru Maina Kageni as the MC. Also in attendance was media personality Mukami Wambora, Joe Muchiri, George Kimani among others.

The Kenya Racing Festival

The Kenya Racing Festival will combine both Go-Kart racing and F1 Virtual Reality Simulation – an F1 simulator takes you through a virtual journey of full F1 experience.

The fastest team both on Go-Kart and F1 Driver Simulator, will get an opportunity to witness the world finest F1 drivers proving their mettle on the challenging Yas Marina Circuit, courtesy of Johnnie Walker.

The selected 20 teams will compete for a month to earn points in the three qualifiers that will be held at Whistling Moran in Athi River and they will accumulate points based on fastest lap timings. The Finals will take place in the month of October 2019, where the top-20 will compete for the top-3 position.

Diageo Head of Spirits, Grace Nshemeire-Gwaku said that “We are excited to unveil the 20 finalists for the Kenya Racing Festival and this year Johnnie Walker will be celebrating 200 years of existence and of those 200 years, we have spent a strong 70 years championing and celebrating Motor-sport, so Johnnie Walker has always had Motorsport as the passion point and we are excited to be Formula 1 whisky sponsors.”

Celebrating 200th anniversary

Formula 1 attracts more than 450 million television audience and a track attendance audience of around 1.5 million every year.

This year, the season started off in March in Australia and will go on to November in Abu Dhabi having at least one Grand Prix race each month in different countries/states.

Johnnie Walker has grown to become the world’s No.1 Scotch Whisky with the memorable tagline “Keep Walking” and it will be celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2020.
