Kenyan actress Mumbi Maina features in The Matrix trilogy

Kenyan actress Mumbi Maina has announced that she will be featured in the next instalment of The Matrix, one of the most popular trilogies in the world.

Taking to her Instagram, Mumbi was excited to reveal that Kenyans can expect to catch the trailer for The Matrix 4 on Thursday, September 9, 2021.

The new movie has been titled The Matrix Resurrections and is a sequel to The Matrix Revolutions that was released in 2003.

Kenyans will have to wait until December 22, 2021, to watch the whole movie when it is released.

The movie is very popular for pushing the boundaries of science fiction and changing the game when it was first released.

At the 2000 Academy Awards, the film received Oscars for film editing, sound, sound-effects editing, and visual effects, winning in every category it was considered in that year.

Mumbi has been quiet about her role in the movie up until she shared the trailer’s release date.

Mumbi Maina is a prolific actor, dancer, who has actively starred in local and international film projects since the beginning of her fledgling career in 2009.

She is best known for her role as Zakia, in Netflix's sci-fi show Sense8. She was born in Nairobi, Kenya, where from a young age she expressed her creativity through dance and choreography.

After garnering her first role in 2009, she played Riziki in Unseen Unsung Unforgotten where she received her first Kalasha Award nomination for best-supporting Actress.

In 2011, she was selected to participate in a workshop with One Fine Day Films, where she trained with Alfre Woodard.

Mumbi was then cast in the film Shattered where she acted beside Nigeria's famed Rita Dominic. She earned her second Kalasha Award Nomination for her role (Mumbi) in the film.

Her name became a household name through award-winning shows like NTV Kenya's Mali playing Nandi Mali (2011-2013) and received a Kalasha award nomination for best-supporting actress.

She then played Cecelia in Jane and Abel (2015); and Jackie in How To Find A Husband (2015).

She starred in several DSTV'S Africa Magic Original Films (AMOF) such as 29; Terra Firma; Being Oti; Lovers Ransom and Runaway Groom.

The actress played Jojo in the futuristic film Kati Kati, a Kenyan-produced and directed film that later won several international awards, such as the TIFF 2016 Prize of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) for the Discovery program.

The Matrix Box office performance

The Matrix was highly successful, earning over Sh50 billion worldwide on a modest budget of Sh 6 billion.

The sequels had a much larger budget of Sh16 billion each; Reloaded was also a big commercial success, earning almost Sh81billion worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film in history, a title which it held for 13 years until it was surpassed by the film Deadpool.

The Matrix Revolutions had the world's first simultaneous release across major cities all over the world which for the first time in history included both a release in China and a release in IMAX theatres.

Its five-day opening at Sh22 billion broke the previous record but ultimately the film made Sh47 billion, a little less than the original.
