Here are some tips and tricks on how to store some of your favorite foods to keep them from going bad.

Store onions in old pair of tights

Store onions in old pair of tights and hang them in a dark cupboard to make them last for over 2 months.

This may seem a bit weird but this trick will make them last longer by simply tying a knot in the tights between each onion to give them as much air space as possible.

Store greens in the fridge

Storing your greens such as celery, broccoli and lettuce will help them stay crisp for 4 weeks or more.

Ripe bananas

Store ripe bananas in the fridge in order to avoid it getting spoilt quickly. The banana peel may darken but that should not scare you as it just means that the banana is riper thus more nutritious.

Do not however store unripe bananas in the fridge as it inhibits the banana from ripening.

Another helpful trick is to keep them all in a bunch and wrapping the conjoined stalks tightly with cling film. This prevents the ethylene in the stalks from reaching the rest of the bananas which could make them last up to 5 days longer.

Squeeze lemon on your avocado to keep it from going brown

Avocados are very tricky to preserve but it is very easy to make them last longer by simply squeezing a bit of lemon juice on them. If you have an extra half of avocado that you want to eat later on, this trick will keep the avocado from going brown.

Peanut butter

Store your peanut butter upside down to allow the oil near the lid to move through the entire jar which will help make the peanut butter creamier.

Keep your mushrooms in a paper bag

Mushrooms last longer when in a cool dry place as opposed to being kept in the fridge.

Keep them wrapped in a paper bag to reduce the moisture. The key to keeping the mushrooms longer is to make sure they stay clean and dry.

If they get too dry, run them through water to resume their previous nature.

Mayonnaise

Storing your mayonnaise in the fridge door will make it last two to three months after buying it.

When stored in the inner part of the fridge, mayonnaise can get too cold and will cause it to separate and leave oil at the top of the jar.

Red wine

Wine oxidizes quickly and becomes stale if not stored correctly. Store red wine in the fridge with the cork still on which should keep it fresh for 3-5 days.

You could also store the wine upright to reduce surface area exposed to oxygen.

Once you take out the red wine bottle from the fridge, warm it up by placing it in luke warm water to avoid drastic temperature changes which could spoil your wine.

For best results, store the wine upright to minimize surface area exposed to oxygen.

Clean your fridge once something goes bad

Once something goes bad, make sure you clean and disinfect your fridge because it leaves behind a gang of mold which will infect the rest of your good food.
