5 foods you should eat more of this cold season

Foods to eat to boost your mood in the cold weather

The sudden change of weather from unbearably hot to very rainy may dampen your mood.

This could lead to feelings of lethargy, boredom, an inability to take an interest in things that were previously enjoyable to you.

To help counter these blues, you can take various foods that will help lift your spirits.

1. Fatty fish

These are fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon and tuna. The nutrients found in the fish have positive effects on the brain- helping you get a positive mood- and also boost your heart health.

Try to have fish at least twice a week.

2. Foods rich in Vitamin D

Low levels of Vitamin D have been common among people who suffer from depression. And with fewer hours of direct sunlight during the rainy season, it can't hurt to stock up on Vitamin D.

Foods like salmon, tuna, eggs, fortified dairy products are rich in Vit. D.

3. Whole grains

Whole grains are dense in nutrients and reduce chances of developing depression. Avoid processed foods and junk food as studies say they trigger low grade inflammation of the body and contribute to the development of chronic diseases.

Other foods to eat more of are vegetables, beans, and nuts.

4. Dark chocolate

Eating chocolate improves your mood and decreases stress. According to Cooking Light, flavonoids found in cocoa help in increased blood flow to the brain. Dark chocolate is best as it doesn't contain added sugars.

5. Complex carbohydrates

The digestion of carbs stimulates the production of serotonin- a hormone that regulates mood. Complex carbs can be used to help stimulate the production of serotonin and won't spike production of blood sugar.

Sweet potatoes, whole grains, vegetables, fruits and low fat dairy should be included in your diet.
