46-seater matatu with passengers overturns in flooded river

Floods in Kenya hitting crisis level

46-seater matatu with passengers plunges into flooded River Kyamela, Makueni County

A 46-seater bus on Friday morning was swept away by floods along River Kyamela in Makueni County.

The matatu had passengers on board who were rescued by well wishers before the bus could be carried away by the raging waters.

It is reported that those inside the bus were headed to Mtito Andei for a dowry payment ceremony.

The driver attempted to drive across the flooded stream despite warnings from locals.

Passengers were rescued from the muddy waters and reports indicate that none was seriously harmed.

Deaths caused by floods in various parts of Kenya

Government Spokesman Col. (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna recently stated that over 100 Kenyans have lost their lives in deadly floods that have affected 32 counties.

"The whole country has been affected by the downpour. Roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been destroyed, " he stated.

On Thursday, State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena-Mararo added that a multi-agency team had been formed to investigate the adverse effects of the floods.

"A Government multi-agency team is undertaking a comprehensive assessment of the damage caused by the rains to infrastructure and taking restorative measures including repairs and installation of new facilities as applicable," she stated.
