CS Matiang’i’s meeting with contractors where corruption evidence against 3 CSs was gathered

Details have emerged of a meeting chaired by Interior CS Fred Matiang’i where contractors were asked to name corrupt officials who included three Cabinet Secretaries.

The meeting held at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies was meant to follow up the progress made in various projects by the national government.

Apart from CSs and contractors, the meeting was attended by 19 principal secretaries, Attorney General Paul Kariuki, Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji, Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) CEO Twalib Mbarak and chief executives of State agencies under the infrastructural ministries.

The media was not allowed entrance but the Standard on Thursday reported some of the attendees indicating that they were not even allowed to carry their mobile phones to the tense meeting.

We were frisked at the entrance and asked to hand over our phones to security. Interior PS Karanja Kibicho was the master of ceremonies,” a contractor was quoted as saying.

The source added that Kibicho had a list of top projects and would read out each of them and call on the respective PS or parastatal boss to explain progress made.

Contractors were also asked to explain the challenges they had faced in carrying out the projects.

Three CSs are reported to have been implicated in a corruption saga involving a Sh7 billion tender.

The matter has since been handed over to the DCI and the DPP who are continuing with investigations.

The development came a few days after Matiang’i chaired the first National Development Implementation and Communication Cabinet Committee meeting at Harambee House.

It was agreed that CS and PS would develop reports on the progress of the various projects in their ministries and explain the cause for delays.
