Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has closed a private school in Kibera slums during an impromptu visit.
Magoha shuts down school in Nairobi Permanently after impromptu Visit
The school whose one-storey structure resembled that of Precious Talents Academy where classrooms collapsed on Monday was noted to be a risk for the learners.
CS Magoha further ordered all the 207 learners of the school to join Ayany Estate Primary in Kibera.
This directive comes after Precious Talents Primary School was closed for the week to allow for investigations into the Monday morning tragedy.
A slab that caved in at Precious Talents Academy exposed how learning institutions violate basic building and safety regulations.
Audit of schools
The government ordered the audit of the infrastructure of all schools in the country to ensure that the institutions are habitable.
Deputy President William Ruto said: “It is sad this has happened. However, the government has set aside Ksh10 million to ensure a public primary school is set up soon.”
Further, Parliament has given the Ministry of Education until June to ensure total compliance of minimum national standard of registration by all schools.
In 2014 a team was tasked with looking into the status of education in the county and make recommendations on how to improve performance of learners in public primary schools.
The team recommended that every classroom should be adequately and appropriately equipped to cater for all learners, including those with special needs.
