Worship service halted after man committed suicide in church

A Sunday mass was interrupted on Sunday after a man identified as Dennis Bundi ended his life inside the compound of St John Catholic church in Kutus, Kirinyaga County.

The deceased man hang himself from a tree within the compound and was discovered by worshipers. 

The church chairman Michael Gichinga confirmed the identity of the 26-year-old man adding that he was not aware of any reason that could have driven him to commit suicide.

Police from Wang'uru Police Station arrived at he scene to retrieve the body and the service was allowed to continue thereafter.

3 suicides in 3 days, Kirinyaga county

Residents expressed worry over a frequency of suicides witnessed in the area over the past weekend.

On Friday alone, two men - 40-year-old Simon Kinyua and 32-year-old Daniel Mwaniki - committed suicide in separate incidents.

According to Kutus Chief Nancy Gichuki, the 40-year-old was a member of a robbery gang. He is said to have turned to suicide after a fellow gang member was gunned down in Thika.

Mwaniki was said to have opted for death after domestic squabble at his home.
