The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Friday spoke on when the final Presidential results will be announced after the August 8 General Election.

Responding after a headline on a local paper which indicated that the electoral body would make the announcement within hours, the IEBC dismissed the report.

IEBC mentioned that the time and day of the announcement cannot be preconceived because of various factors including technical ones.

On Wednesday, IEBC boss Wafula Chebukati stated that the electoral body will not announce the presidential results periodically as expected.

Mr Chebukati noted that IEBC will simply announce the final tally.

He highlighted that conducting the periodic announcement will be repetition as the Court had already ordered declaration of the results at the constitution level.

“The role of the national tallying centre is to verify that the winning candidate in presidential elections has obtained 50% +1 votes and that the candidate has obtained at least 25% of the votes in at least 24 counties,” Mr Chebukati said.

The IEBC Chairman added that the declaration of the presidential results shall be based on the verification that the constitutional threshold obtained by the winning candidate.

“The commission also resolved to avail a dedicated link to the media for purposes of relaying the results as received from the polling stations across the country,” he said.
