Raila Odinga, Uhuru Kenyatta and other political aspirants could be barred from participating in the upcoming general elections.

This is after the recent incidents of violence that were witnessed in political rallies with the latest one being in Thika where National Super Alliance Candidate Raila Odinga was pelted with stones; prompting the Independent and Boundaries Commission(IEBC) to take action.

The electoral body condemned the incident alongside those in Kisumu and Kabarnet where the Jubilee and NASA top echelons were heckled.

In a letter on their social media platforms, IEBC said that it has sent investigators to collect information on the cases.

The commission stated that it could take several measures including fining offenders, suspending campaigns in areas prone to violence or worse still barring candidates from participating in the election.

“This show of political intolerance should not be condoned in a democracy like ours…the commission has dispatched a team of investigators to collect more information on the above cases and others,” read part of the IEBC statement by Chairman Wafula Chebukati.

Meanwhile, the commission said that plans for August 8 elections are on track with almost all non-strategic materials being dispatched to regional warehouses.
